A new chapter

For you, and for your baby

For more than a decade I accompanied pregnancies, surgeries and consultations in San Cristóbal. Today I'm taking the step I dreamed of from the very first time I held an ultrasound probe: I am in Caracas, pursuing a sub-specialty in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Universidad Central de Venezuela.

It is the most advanced training that exists for caring for a baby before birth, and I am doing it with you in mind. Every study I learn to read today is an answer I'll be able to give you in time tomorrow.

That is why, while this chapter lasts, I will not be seeing patients in San Cristóbal. But I haven't gone away: I'll be waiting for you in Caracas, with the same warmth as always and with better-prepared hands. I see patients by appointment in Sabana Grande (Torre Provincial), and it would be a joy to welcome you.

Maternal-Fetal Medicine

Seeing your baby before birth

Maternal-fetal medicine treats the baby inside the womb as the patient they already are. These are the studies I am now training in, in Caracas: what they let us see, and what they let us prevent.

  • Weeks 11 to 14

    First-trimester anomaly scan

We measure nuchal translucency, the nasal bone and ductus venosus flow. In a single visit we can estimate the risk of chromosomal conditions and preeclampsia, while there is still time to act.

  • Weeks 20 to 24

    Second-trimester anomaly scan

An organ-by-organ tour of your baby's entire body: heart, brain, spine, kidneys, hands and feet. It is the scan that detects the vast majority of structural malformations.

  • Second and third trimester

    Fetal profile & neurosonography

Your baby's face before you meet them, plus a detailed evaluation of the brain: corpus callosum, cerebellum, ventricles. Emotion and medicine on the same screen.

  • From week 20

    Fetal Doppler

It shows how blood flows through the umbilical artery and the middle cerebral artery. Weeks in advance, it tells us whether your baby is growing comfortably or needs help.

  • Throughout pregnancy

    Maternal-fetal hemodynamic profile

It studies the uterine arteries and the mother's cardiovascular adaptation to pregnancy. It allows us to anticipate preeclampsia and growth restriction before the first symptom appears. The reference guideline covers uterine artery Doppler and pre-eclampsia screening.

  • When diagnosis requires it

    Amniocentesis & cordocentesis

When a definitive answer is needed, amniotic fluid or cord blood is obtained under continuous ultrasound guidance. Millimetric precision for diagnoses that change decisions.

This is the medicine I am training in today, in Caracas. In the meantime, I continue to see gynecology and obstetrics patients by appointment.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to your most common questions

Practical information about consultations, prenatal care, ultrasounds, maternal-fetal medicine and Dr. Kristhy Moreno's practice in Caracas.

  • When should I schedule my first prenatal visit?
Ideally, schedule your first prenatal visit as soon as your pregnancy is confirmed, between weeks 6 and 8. This visit includes a complete clinical history, the first ultrasound and a personalized care plan for the entire pregnancy.
  • What is included in a prenatal checkup?
A prenatal checkup includes clinical evaluation, blood pressure and weight monitoring, fetal growth assessment, trimester-by-trimester laboratory tests, obstetric ultrasound when indicated, nutritional guidance, and education on warning signs.
  • How often should I have a Pap smear?
Every sexually active woman or anyone over 21 should have an annual Pap smear. After three consecutive normal results, the interval can extend to every 2 or 3 years. With prior HPV or cervical lesions, closer follow-up is required.
  • What is a high-risk pregnancy?
A high-risk pregnancy involves an increased chance of complications for the mother, the baby, or both. It includes hypertension, gestational diabetes, multiple pregnancies, advanced maternal age, history of pregnancy loss and autoimmune conditions. It requires more frequent monitoring and detailed ultrasound surveillance with maternal-fetal Doppler.
  • Where does Dr. Kristhy currently see patients?
Dr. Kristhy Moreno currently sees patients in Caracas, at Office F, 8th Floor, Torre Provincial (Sabana Grande) — near Farmatodo, Gran Café, and Tigo stores —, by appointment only. She is in the capital pursuing a sub-specialty in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV).
  • Will she practice in San Cristóbal again?
Yes. The sub-specialty in Maternal-Fetal Medicine takes approximately two years, and once she completes it Dr. Kristhy plans to resume her practice in San Cristóbal, Táchira. In the meantime, any patient, whether from the Andes region or from central Venezuela, is welcome to arrange a consultation in Caracas.
  • What is maternal-fetal medicine and when do I need it?
It is the obstetrics sub-specialty devoted to the baby inside the womb and to the mother's health during pregnancy. It relies on first- and second-trimester anomaly scans, neurosonography, fetal Doppler, the maternal-fetal hemodynamic profile and, when diagnosis requires it, procedures such as amniocentesis or cordocentesis. It is especially valuable in high-risk pregnancies, suspected malformations, growth restriction, multiple pregnancies or a history of preeclampsia.
